Lake Bloomington fishing has been getting better this year, and the BNBC went out to collect. Nine 2-man teams and two lone boaters ventured forth and hunted down the green swimmers. 29 fish were brought in for show and tell.
Veteran BNBC member Fred Myers found three fish to put himself in second place with 7.52 pounds. Myers dug deep into the Bloomington vegetation to recover those fish Indiana Jones style. No word on the bait selection he used, but it would be safe to say soft plastics were key in his fishing.
Just a half pound behind Fred was Dan Smith with three fish going 6.97 pounds. Dan was handicapped by being paired with Jerry “Pops” Martoglio, but this isn’t golf, so you have to work with what you’re given. Smith worked moving baits around vegetation and wood cover to elicit those keepers.
Claiming big bass was Drew Packman with a solid 3.93 pound fish. Nice job, Drew!
I guess I should put something in here about the winner of the event. If I did, I’d have to talk about this being the third Sunday event he’s won. And I would certainly have to talk about that stupid Banjo Minnow again and make mention of “Billy”. But when you can write whatever you want, you do. So… Jerry went “picking and grinning” with the Banjo Minnow and “Billy” to claim first place for the third time in a Sunday event. Martoglio claimed a two pound lead over second with 9.53 spread thin over 5 fish. His tournament results with the Banjo Minnow are going to get him a commercial if he’s not careful, and the club definitely won’t alllow it to continue.
The event was followed by a cookout which was a total success. Hamburgers, hot dogs and brats were grilled and served up hot by our gracious volunteers Eric Varner and Larry Russell. Many thanks to those that brought the various side dishes (salads, pastas, chips, desserts), all of which were excellent. I would know, I sampled them all.
On a side note for the day, the father-son team of BNBC members Dave and Brad Norris spanked the field at Spring Lake in a Bass 25 event with 23-plus pounds. Congrats, guys!
