BNBC Tuesday Night Tournament Series - Bloomington

The wheels of the bus…

After a couple of weeks of extreme heat and humidity, the weather let up and offered our 19 teams some pleasurable conditions to fish in. Air temps were between 71 and 67 (at the end of the evening) with a mild breeze from the Northeast.  Water temps had fallen several degrees to about 75.  All of this lead to some fantastic fishing, and the best Tuesday Nighter we’ve had to date.  36 bass were brought in for a total of 91.67 pounds!  That is a 2.5 pound per fish average.   Here’s how the teams did it.

Ken Petersen brought his son, Erik, along for the evening.  And he was the team’s good luck charm as he caught the event’s big bass late in the game on a loaned “Peter-bait”.  Ken wouldn’t even let his son keep one of the fabled lures!  That bass weighed in at 4.8 pounds, which anchored their three fish bag of 9.04 pounds,  putting them in fourth place, just out of the money.  The key to the Petersen’s success was the Peter-bait through and around vegetation.  Ken sacked up a few more Brett Myers entries along the way, so be sure to congratulate him on that accomplishment!

Greg Bayles took Dave Norris fishing, but decided to make him man the net for their third place finish.  Greg caught all the team’s keepers, giving them a 10.08 pound total weight.  Norris commented afterwards that he was a great net man.  Their four fish sack was caught deep using a variety of baits.  No extravagant claims of lost big ‘uns for the team, which means Greg’s hooks hit home every time, and his line switch paid off.

The team of Rick Huette and Jack Mikel claimed their second second place finish with a 5 fish limit weighing 11.72 pounds.  An impressive bag for any Tuesday event.  Rick and Jack fished shallow waters with jigs, worms and buzzbaits to boat their bass.  You’d be hard pressed to wipe the smiles from their faces after catching the fish like they did.

And then there was one…

Coming off of a skunk-out at Clinton and a less than impressive showing at Terry Brown’s Thursday wildcat tournament last week, James Hurt (that’s Short Bus to those in the know) fished solo and was looking for redemption.  He got just that and then some with a 5 fish limit to claim a first place victory over the competition.  The Bus sacked 13.27 pounds of bass without a partner to net his fish.  The largest fish went 4.34 which wasn’t enough for big bass, but he noted that that fish, like all his others, was swung in, not netted or grabbed.  Hurt fished slop with a frog all night to rack up the bass.  As with any slop fishing, there were tragic losses, but none too devastating to cost him the event. (Editor’s note:  I don’t want that construed in any way to be an entry for the Brett Myers award, thank you very much!).  Celebratory drinks were bought by Short Bus afterwards to all attendees.  Make a note of that - free drinks if you let Short Bus win!
